My very serious and always eloquent friend Virgil makes an ugly point on his blog:
If our culture places little value on the lives of women, the lives of black women are assigned none at all. Besieged by men of all colors, black women, who in a just world would enjoy the solidarity of their sisters, must instead share a nation with white women who by virtue of their tolerance for this dehumanization are willing accomplices in the rape culture that victimizes black women.

I don’t know that all white women “tolerate” this degradation. I think many of them simply don’t know what to do about it, or they feel powerless to stop it. I certainly don’t like the bias towards cute blondes when it comes to “missing person” stories, but I don’t have much influence on the media.
